Photo design guide

How to use AI to design a room from a photo

This walkthrough starts in the Room Design workspace after sign-in. The control names below match the editor. If you arrived with photos from the home-page assistant, let that request finish before starting another case.

Prepare photos of one real room

Use photos you own or have permission to upload, without visible private documents. The editor accepts one to eight JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or HEIF photos of the same living room, bedroom or kitchen. Floor plans, isolated product pictures, commercial spaces and exteriors are outside this workflow. Start with one clear view if you are unsure which photos to use.

Follow the actual editing workflow

  1. Sign in and choose photos

Open Room Design and sign in if asked. In the empty workspace, use Upload room photos / Choose photos. Selecting photos creates a room case and starts analysis automatically; there is no separate Analyse button.

  2. Wait for the main view and furniture analysis

The system checks the scene, prepares a working main view and identifies movable furniture. The first uploaded photo is the initial main reference; this editor has no separate main-photo picker. Review the resulting preview. Extra views provide evidence of the same room, rather than separate designs. Generate stays disabled until analysis is ready.

  3. Check Room type

Auto detect is the starting choice. You can select Living room, Bedroom or Kitchen as the intended use. A target-use change does not permit structural work: kitchen cabinets, counters, sinks, hobs, fixed appliances and utility locations remain protected. Choosing Kitchen cannot add missing plumbing or built-in facilities.

  4. Set explicit furniture actions

Under Furniture, select a recognized item, then click Keep, Remove or Replace. Explicitly choose Keep for an item you need preserved. Only recognized movable furniture has these controls; bedding, small decor and fixed facilities may not have selectable labels. Before the first successful design, you can add or remove draft photos when the controls are available; changing photos restarts analysis and clears object-specific choices.

  5. Choose Refresh level and add details

Partial is the initial mode: keep existing unselected furniture and its position while allowing a coordinated change to finishes and decor. Precise limits changes to your selected actions and requests; Redesign allows broader furnishing and styling changes. All modes still respect explicit Keep and fixed structures. Your first Remove or Replace selects Precise only if you have not manually chosen a mode. Additional requests is optional; use it for details such as material or colour, without contradicting a Keep choice.

  6. Generate, then check the result

Click Generate design when analysis is ready and an allowance is available. The service generates and reviews a candidate; it may internally attempt one correction before blocking a result that fails review. Compare switches between the workspace Original view and the selected design. Original can be a prepared view, so also check your uploaded photo for walls, windows, viewpoint and the objects you meant to retain. Passing automated checks is not a guarantee of exact geometry.

  7. Choose a version before continuing

Select a successful version in the version rail, check its recognized items and current choices, then use Generate new version. That edit starts from the selected version, not automatically from the first photo. If recognition for that version failed, use Retry furniture recognition before continuing; it retries analysis, not image generation. Download is available for generated versions. Once a successful version exists, original case photos cannot be replaced through the draft controls.

Example settings and requests

These are instructions to try on matching photos, not tested image results or customer case studies. Use an item that actually appears in your recognized furniture list.

Living room: replace a coffee table

Furniture: click Keep for the sofa and Replace for the coffee table. Set Refresh level to Precise, then enter:

Use a light-oak coffee table with a similar footprint. Leave the rest of the room unchanged.

Kitchen: update a freestanding stool

Room type: Kitchen. If a movable stool was recognized, choose Replace for it and set Precise. Keep fixed kitchen facilities out of the edit request.

Replace the selected stool with a similar-sized wooden stool. Preserve the cabinets, countertop, sink, hob and existing utility positions.

Allowances, failures and practical limits

Room cases and image generations have separate allowances. Free allowances reset with the UTC calendar month; use the remaining amounts shown in your account rather than assuming a lifetime offer. Archiving a case does not restore its monthly creation allowance.

A running generation temporarily reserves allowance. Failed or review-blocked generations do not count as successful generations, but a case already created still counts towards that month’s case allowance even if its analysis failed. Follow the specific upload, analysis, quota or review message instead of repeatedly creating a new case.

The output is a visual design reference, not a measured plan, structural proposal or renovation quote. Review the downloaded file’s actual dimensions and check measurements and clearances yourself. The service requests high-resolution output and performs model-based checks; neither exact 2K dimensions nor perfect structural fidelity is guaranteed.
